Introduction to Dentures

Dentures are not inherently natural and require a period of adjustment time. In order to provide an adequate foundation on which to chew, the dentures press on the gum tissue.

Since gum tissue is soft and not solid, there is always some movement of the bridge. Most people learn to tolerate this movement, but not everyone can wear a denture.

Tightness of dentures is dependent on many factors and is usually related to your ability to control the muscles of your mouth. Most people are able to do this. True “suction” occurs in few cases and some people will require adhesives.

Denture Fabrication

During the fabrication of dentures, your input will be solicited regarding the appearance of the denture prosthesis. When the teeth are set in wax, you will have an opportunity to preview the dentures and the exact teeth color, shape and arrangement. At that time, we can discuss any changes you desire. This is an important point in the process because once the denture prosthesis goes into the final acrylic phase, no further changes can be made.

We make our dentures with the most modern and durable materials and techniques. However, your specific degree of success with this new denture is not predictable. Therefore, as in any medical procedure there is no guarantee or warrantee on function. Fees paid for denture services are not refundable.

Bone Loss (Atrophy)

Although our dentures are made of the most modern materials, they will deteriorate with time. In addition, continued bone loss (atrophy) is a biological fact of life and will lead to a reduction in the support for your denture. At that time, we recommend a new impression be made so that a new denture will fit the new shape of your gum.

Implant Supported Dentures

In most cases, an implant supported and retained denture can be made that will provide a much more stable and retentive prosthesis. Research indicated that this type of procedure rehabilitates the jawbone so that it can better resist atrophy. Most patients tell us that they have at least twice the chewing ability with an implant supported or retained prosthesis verses normal dentures. We would be pleased to evaluate your personal condition and discuss this exceptional alternative to the floating complete dentures.

Removable Partial Bridge

If you have insufficient teeth for a stationary bridge and dental implant therapy is not possible for you a removable bridge may be the best treatment possible.

Removable bridges are not inherently natural and therefore, it takes some time to get used to them. The removable bridge presses on the gum tissue in many areas in order to provide and adequate foundation on which to chew. Since gum tissue is not solid, you will have to get used to this pressure, and most people do. Because the gum tissues are soft, there is always some movement of the bridge as it functions; THIS IS NORMAL. Most people learn to tolerate this movement.

Tightness of a bridge is dependent on many factors and is usually related to your ability to control the muscles of your mouth. Most people are able to do this. True “suction” occurs in few cases; in fact, partial dentures usually move to some degree. Sore spots will be treated for six months as part of your prosthetic service.

Clasp-type removable bridges (partials) are complex prostheses requiring careful evaluation, design and prescription by your dentist. We consider many factors regarding the health of your teeth and gums: Comfort, chewing ability, durability and cosmetics. A removable bridge must be custom designed especially for each individual. However, many factors such as the shape and position of your teeth cannot be changed, and therefore, dictate the clasp design of the final bridge. We need and request the input of each patient before finishing any prosthesis. We will not process your prosthesis until you have approved the type and arrangement of the teeth.

Continued bone loss (atrophy) is a biological fact of life and will at some point (usually 5-15 years) lead to a change in the support for your bridge. At that time, we recommend a new impression be taken. We will make every effort to make your case successful. Your cooperation is an essential ingredient in this endeavor.

In most cases, an implant reconstruction can be made that will provide a more stable and retentive prosthesis. This should be discussed as an alternative to a partial bridge. Our desire is to create the most successful pain free and stable prosthesis for all of our patients in the Cleveland, Ohio area.
