Innovative Gum Grafts to Cover Receding Gums

In the past one of the most difficult problems to solve is recession of the gum tissue and the associated esthetic and functional problems created by this difficulty. It must be remembered that the most important issue is that the gum loss is a reflection of the underlying loss of the bone. Bone is the foundation and support for the teeth. To correct this problem our office utilizes a specialized skin graft product called Alloderm.

The Alloderm procedure utilizes banked skin graft material to cover the exposed root surface. The Alloderm material undergoes extensive screening and is tested and there is no known evidence of transfer of any type of disease. Alloderm is used extensively to replace damaged skin in the treatment of burn victims, to rebuild tissues in orthopedic and urogenital procedures and in dental tissue augmentation. Since 1994 Alloderm has been successfully used in over one million procedures.

There are two methods for obtaining the tissue necessary to perform the root coverage procedure. The original technique was to surgically remove a piece of tissue from the patient’s palate and transfer it via free gingival grafting procedure to cover the affected area. With the Alloderm procedure the donated banked tissue is utilized to cover the exposed root surface. This eliminates the need to take tissue from the palate and create a second surgical area with the associated pain from that surgical site.

The effectiveness of this procedure is very high. With proper utilization the graft will cover over the exposed root surface, reduce sensitivity from root exposure and prevent further loss of gingival tissue and bone.
